Do you ever feel stuck with a messy room you’re unsure how to fix? In this video, I’m virtually stepping into my subscribers’ cluttered spaces—from living rooms piled high with toys, to cramped homeschool corners, to laundry rooms doubling as craft central—and giving them total organizing makeovers!
Britney’s Living Room: A Play Space That Works
Britney reached out for help organizing her living room, which also serves as a play area for her five-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy. Her main concerns? She wanted an open space where he could move around easily and a designated area for herself near the fireplace.
The Challenges:
- Lack of defined zones for play and relaxation
- Safety concerns due to her son’s mobility needs
- Overwhelming toy clutter
The Solution:
- Clear Pathways for Mobility – We removed bulky furniture, including a large train table that dominated the space, and replaced it with a smaller, more accessible table.
- Functional Storage – Those flimsy toy bins from big-box stores? They had to go! Instead, we introduced a low-to-the-ground storage system, making it easier for her son to access his toys safely.
- Defined Spaces – One side of the room became a kid-friendly zone, while the other was transformed into a cozy, adult-friendly area by the fireplace.
- 3D Visualization – We used HomeStyler.com (a free interior design tool) to bring this vision to life, making it easy for Britney to see the transformation before making changes.
Amanda’s Homeschool Room: A Functional Learning Space for Six Kids
Homeschooling six children is no small feat, and Amanda’s biggest struggle was keeping the space organized and functional. Despite her best efforts, the room always ended up cluttered and chaotic.
The Challenges:
- Limited storage for school supplies and books
- A layout that didn’t support active learning
- Not enough open space for group activities
The Solution:
- Maximizing Wall Storage – We incorporated staggered shelving and floating shelves to keep books and supplies off the floor but still easily accessible.
- Rearranging Desks for Better Flow – Amanda’s large desk was moved under the window, freeing up more floor space for group activities like circle time and hands-on learning.
- Creating Individual Workspaces – Each child received their own desk with storage in between, allowing them to focus while also keeping materials organized.
- A 3D Room Makeover – Using HomeStyler, we designed a space with modular storage and a well-defined layout that balances study and play.
Julie’s Multi-Use Room: Office, Music Studio & Gaming Space
Julie and her husband needed a shared space that worked for both of them—he needed a functional home office (with a gaming area), while she needed a space to teach music lessons. The challenge? Finding a way to keep the room organized while meeting both their needs.
The Challenges:
- No proper storage for books and music materials
- A cluttered layout that made it hard to access essential items
- No clear division between work and play
The Solution:
- Dividing the Space Visually – We added a large bookcase in the center of the room to separate the office and gaming area from the music lesson space.
- Utilizing Vertical Storage – Floating shelves along the walls provided storage for books, lesson materials, and decor without taking up floor space.
- Decluttering & Reorganizing – By relocating less-used items and getting rid of unnecessary clutter, we created a room that functions for both work and leisure.
- Smart Design Tools – With HomeStyler, we tested different layouts before making changes, ensuring that the final design met both their needs.
Anita’s Bedroom Storage Dilemma
The Challenge
Anita’s bedroom had become a storage locker. She used it for extra storage, her granddaughter played there, and she worked on her computer in the same space. Every night, she felt frustrated about the mess but didn’t know where to start. She had no garbage clutter, but the layout wasn’t working.
Solution:
- Keep the bed placement due to the sloping ceiling—it’s in the perfect spot to avoid head bumps.
- Ditch the dresser that wasn’t functional and replace it with cube shelving along one side of the room for organized storage.
- Use floating shelves above the cube storage to maximize every inch of space.
- Keep the L-shaped desk layout since it allows for printer and paper storage while making the most of the available space.
With these changes, Anita now has a streamlined, organized, and multi-purpose room that works for both storage and daily use.
Kristen’s Cluttered Entryway & Dining Room
The Challenge
Kristen’s entryway had no real storage system, leading to jackets and shoes piling up. Her dining room had turned into a multipurpose space for pantry items, donations, and her husband’s home office—creating visual chaos.
The Solutions
- Replace the small desk in the entryway with a proper mudroom-style storage area for jackets and shoes.
- Reevaluate the need for two tables. Since Kristen primarily eats in the dining room, removing the kitchen table allows space for a stand-up pantry system to store food more effectively.
- Declutter donations immediately. Moving them to the car for drop-off clears valuable space instantly.
- Install upper cabinets or floating shelves in the dining area to store food in a visually pleasing and accessible way.
- Swap the decorative bench for functional storage. A closed storage unit keeps items neat while giving her husband a designated workspace.
These changes create a much more functional, organized home that works for Kristen’s family’s busy lifestyle.
Tina’s Laundry Room Craft Chaos
The Challenge:
Tina’s laundry room doubled as a craft space, but clutter made it impossible to work there. She ended up crafting at the kitchen table, which wasn’t ideal. She needed a way to store supplies and create a functional workspace.
Solutions:
- Declutter first! Getting rid of unused supplies creates space for better organization.
- Extend shelving to the ceiling for maximum storage.
- Add a work island on wheels so it can be moved when needed but still provides a dedicated crafting space.
- Use pegboards above the desk to store craft tools and supplies efficiently.
- Upgrade the laundry area with a cabinet above the machines and a rod for hanging clothes.
By making these small tweaks, Tina now has a well-organized, dual-purpose room that functions for both laundry and crafting.
Fitting Rebecca’s Entire Home Into 400 Square Feet!
Rebecca reached out with a major design challenge—she had just built a small home and was moving in within the week. The entire floor plan is only 672 square feet, and that includes everything: a sunroom, entrance, kitchen, laundry room, office, and closet.
The Challenge:
Rebecca’s main living area had just 400 square feet to fit a double bed, an office, a kitchen, a dining area, a living space with a TV, and an entrance with coat storage. That’s a lot to fit into such a small space!
To make things even trickier, Rebecca had already mapped out a rough floor plan, but I was concerned about the flow and functionality of the space. The way she had positioned her bed created some major pinch points, limiting movement and making the space feel even smaller.
Solutions:
- Repositioning the Bed for Better Flow
- Originally, Rebecca had placed the bed in a way that only allowed access from the foot, which wasn’t practical. Plus, it blocked the flow around the sofa.
- Instead, I rotated the bed and tucked it into a corner, creating a better traffic flow and more accessibility.
- To add privacy and storage, I placed a small bookcase at the foot of the bed—this way, the bed isn’t the first thing you see when entering the home.
- Maximizing Seating & Dining Space
- A small-space struggle is finding a comfortable place to eat that isn’t just a kitchen island. Sometimes, eating at an island feels too informal or uncomfortable, especially when hosting guests.
- I suggested a bench against the wall with a small bistro table and two chairs. This setup allows for flexible seating that doesn’t block movement.
- The chairs can be moved into the living area when extra seating is needed!
- Creating a Multi-Functional Living Area
- A compact apartment-sized sofa was the perfect fit, leaving room for a small kitchen island if she wanted one.
- The desk was tucked neatly into a corner, giving her an organized workspace without taking over the room.
- A designated entryway with hooks and shoe storage helped keep the entrance clutter-free while still functional.
If you’re feeling stuck in your cluttered space, remember: ✅ Declutter first to see what you truly need. ✅ Maximize vertical space with shelving and wall storage. ✅ Use multi-functional furniture to make the most of your space. ✅ Relocate items that don’t belong (like donations in the trunk instead of the floor!).
A few small adjustments can completely transform your home, making it more functional and beautiful!
