We’re being tricked into wasting thousands of dollars every single year—on subscriptions, apps, groceries, and even greeting cards. Enough is enough!

This post isn’t just a list of budgeting tips. It’s a call to action. Let’s put your money back where it belongs—in your wallet.

1. Streaming Subscriptions

We all jumped into streaming to save money on cable, but now we’re paying for Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, Disney+, and a dozen others. The problem? We forget what we’re subscribed to—and what we actually watch.

Money-Saving Move: Cancel everything. Wait and see what you truly miss. Then, re-subscribe—one at a time—only if needed.

2. Tech Storage You Don’t Use

From iCloud to Dropbox, those monthly fees add up—especially when we don’t even know what we’re storing.

Money-Saving Move: Delete files, photos, and apps you no longer use. Then, downgrade or cancel your paid storage plans.

3. Online Shopping

One-tap shopping is convenient—but dangerous.  Ever received a package and forgot what was inside? Same.

Money-Saving Tricks:

  • Remove your saved credit card info from your Amazon account.

  • Set a timer: Wait 1 hour for small purchases, 24 hours for big ones.

  • If you still want it tomorrow, go ahead. Odds are—you won’t.

4. Unsubscribe from Marketing Emails

Those tempting “70% off” sales emails? They’re costing you time, attention, and money.

Money-Saving Move: Make Black Friday your annual “Unsubscribe Day.” Or better yet—do it monthly. Your inbox (and wallet) will thank you.

5. Gift Cards

More than 25% of gift cards go unused—that’s literal money sitting in a drawer.

Money-Saving Move: Have a “Gift Card Day.” Use them all up on a fun, intentional outing. No overspending, just free fun.

6. Daily Grind

A $6 coffee each day adds up to $1,500/year—that’s a vacation.

Money-Saving Move: Buy a $90 coffee maker. Brew at home. Use cute cups to make it feel fancy. Add a muffin from your own fridge if you must.

7. Grocery Bill Savings

The average family wastes 30% of their fridge food—that’s hundreds down the drain.

Money-Saving Move: Before grocery shopping, check your fridge. Plan meals around what’s about to spoil. It only takes 5 minutes.  Download my FREE MEAL PLANNER HERE.

8. Bulk Shop

Bulk buying can save money—if you’re intentional.

Money-Saving Strategy:

  • Only buy in bulk if you use it constantly.

  • Keep a list of items you consistently go through.

  • Have a designated “bulk overflow” shelf or closet.

9. Go Generic

Some name-brand items are worth it. Others? Total waste.

Money-Saving Move: Skip the name brand for:

  • Canned fruits and veggies

  • Baking supplies

  • Cat litter

  • Paper goods

10. The Takeout Trap!

No plan = no dinner = $73 McDonald’s order for the family.

Money-Saving Move: Spend 10 minutes a week meal planning. Use online tools or AI to help you plan based on what’s in your fridge. Your wallet (and waistline) will thank you.

11. Cleaning Supplies

Stainless steel cleaner. Granite cleaner. Shower spray. These often sit unused—and many expire within 3 months.

Money-Saving Move: Use a multipurpose cleaner, vinegar, or baking soda. They work, and they’re cheap. Or you can make your own homemade cleaners.  Find all the recipes here.

12. Phantom Energy

Your gaming consoles, computers, and TVs use power even when off. It’s called phantom energy draw.

Money-Saving Move: Use a power bar with a switch. Turn it off at night. Save up to $30/month.

13. Credit Card Debt

Carrying a balance? You’re not alone—but it’s costing you big time.

Example: A $3,000 balance with minimum payments can take 20 years to pay off and cost $4,500+ in interest.

Money-Saving Mission: Prioritize paying off debt fast. The quicker you do, the more you save.

14. Memberships

If you’re not going, it’s not motivation—it’s a money leak.

Money-Saving Move: Cancel and opt for free workouts at home or the park.

15. Storage

Ditch the storage locker!  If you don’t want it in your house, why pay to keep it somewhere else?

Money-Saving Move: Declutter instead. Don’t pay to store stuff you’ll never use.

16. Rethink Greeting Cards

$8 for a card that goes in the trash? I don’t think so!

Money-Saving Move: Write a handwritten note or gift a printed photo. It’s more personal—and practically free.

17. Avoid Themed Gifts and Party Junk

Holiday-themed teddy bears, Valentine’s Day décor, first birthday party overkill—these aren’t essentials.

Money-Saving Move: Give practical, meaningful gifts that last. Celebrate without overspending on throwaway décor.

18. Name-Brand Kids’ Clothes

Kids grow like weeds—and expensive clothes often go unworn.

Money-Saving Move: Shop secondhand. Check out thrift stores, online marketplaces, or swaps with friends.

19. Audit Your App Spending

In-app purchases and game boosts seem harmless—until you realize you’re spending $70/month.

Money-Saving Move: Check your app store subscriptions and spending. Cancel what you don’t use.

20. Turn Off Auto-Renewals

Those small monthly charges are easy to forget—but they add up.

Money-Saving Move: Turn off auto-renew for all apps and subscriptions. You’ll be forced to re-evaluate each one before it renews.

21. Get Mad!

That’s really the theme here: Get mad at how easy it is to spend money without thinking. Then, take your power back.
